An Author’s Team

I finished the first draft of my debut novel last June.  So, what’s next?  Initially I told myself I want to write a novel.  I wasn’t focused on whether I wanted to publish my novel.  Honestly when I started out, it felt daunting just to write the novel.  So now that I have my first “first draft” novel, I have decided I want to publish my book.

1.       First thing I needed is get was an editor to really look through the content of the story.  I am no English major.  English was not my favorite topic.  I was a math girl in school.  So that is exactly what I did.  I hired an editor. I am not going to lie, that was scary to allow another person to read my novel.

2.      Once I got serious about publishing my novel, I decided to create myself a social media community.  Honestly, how hard could it be to create a few stories and some catchy posts.  I jumped in headfirst on this activity.  I set up my author Facebook, Instagram, and Threads accounts.  And before I knew it, I was consumed (maybe even obsessed) with keeping up with my social media platforms.  So, I hired a social media marketer to help me polish up my posts and free up some of my time to focus on the editing of my first draft.

3.      Next, I realized I need a book cover.  How on earth was I going to do this?  I don’t have a stitch of artistic ability.  Well, not to toot my own horn, but I can draw a pretty mean stick figure.  So, I reached out to a graphic artist I know and commissioned a book cover.  I hope to be revealing the book cover before the end of the year.

I am quite certain there are several other things still on the path to publishing, but I am not there yet.  I have to tackle my tasks in small bites to ensure success.  That may be a topic for a future blog.

The bottom line here is that publishing a novel is not for the faint of heart.  For all of you out there who have successfully published a novel or two, my hat’s off to you!  I am finding that it really requires help from others to successfully launch a book.

Just like the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child”, well, It takes a team to write and publish a novel
