Editing The First Draft
I hired a first-time content editor to review the first draft of my debut novel about five months ago. She did a great job. She provided some solid honest feedback which I am forever grateful for. But then I set out to implement the feedback and soon discovered that updating edits and feedback is a tough job. I have been at it for about three months and still have quite a bit more work to do. I now know my expectations to wrap this book up in 2024 were very unrealistic.
Part of my struggle has been with my day job. For the past 2.5 months, it has truly consumed my life. I have been squeezing in short writing stints whenever possible. But it never feels like the available time I have allows me the opportunity to really dig in and make significant progress on the edits. Some days I can complete a chapter and other days; I settle for just one paragraph.
I am nervous to set a new goal since I have very little experience with the world of editing novels. But there is a part of me that knows, that without a goal, then I am wondering aimlessly. So, I am setting a new goal to complete the edits by the end of the year. I want to send out copies of my debut novel to beta readers first thing next year. This will be a tough goal, but it’s time for me to finish this book. I have many other book ideas swirling around in my head and want to give them the attention they deserve as well.
I welcome your comments and words of encouragement.
