Meet Charlie

I am currently self-editing my debut novel.  Editing is a very tedious task.  However, during this tedious process, I find I am gaining further insights into the characters of the novel.  My debut novel, titled "Until All Is forgiven” has multiple characters across two different time eras.

Today I would like to introduce you to Charlie. I pulled from my own experiences as I developed Charlie’s character.  In the novel, you will get to know about Charlie’s past.  You will learn that she fears disapproval and being judged by others.  She wants her life to be simple and predictable.  She likes to follow the rules of life as she understands them.  She is an introvert and struggles to build friendships.

In the present, Charlie is married to Tony and she has a 12-year-old daughter named Lacey.  She has a demanding career as an executive at a high-profile marketing firm.

Charlie has long light brown hair with highlights and blue eyes.  She is considered attractive at 5’ 6” with an athletic build.

As much as Charlie wants her life to be simple and predictable, Charlie is experiencing a re-occurring dream that begins to disrupt her routine.  She initially sets out to get help so that the dream will stop.  However, she ends up on a journey of self-discovery and healing.

Excerpt from “Until All Is Forgiven”:

Charlie was not sure how to reply.  Jan’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts.  She wasn’t even sure how long she had been standing there.  Finally, she mustered up the courage to ask Jan if she believed in coincidences.  Jan’s face beamed with a huge smile when Charlie asked her this question.  Charlie could not believe that Jan could beam an even larger smile.  Jan finally replied, “I believe everything happens for a reason and there are no coincidences.  I like to call it synchronicity.”

Charlie could tell that she touched on a subject that was right up Jan’s ally.  It seemed Jan could go on about this subject forever if Charlie let her.  Charlie could feel herself becoming drawn into Jan’s world, but it didn’t take long for the voice in her head to say, “get to work.”  So, she cut Jan off and explained that she needed to get to work.  She thanked her and scurried out of the lobby before Jan could even say “you’re welcome”.

In that paragraph would the phrase be "right up Jan's alley" not ally. You know better than me but just wondered about this phrase. Sounding good!!
