Taking A Break

I began immersing myself in the writing community about 5 weeks ago.  It has been an amazing experience so far.  I have learned many things from people I have never even met.  There are many out there offering support to me and fellow authors no matter where we are in our process.  I am impressed with how many first time and indie authors are out there in the world.

Over these past 5 weeks I have been extremely focused on working on the edits on my debut novel and building a writing community.  It’s all been wonderful, and simultaneously overwhelming.  I find myself becoming a bit obsessed with diving into the writer's world. I have a full-time job and my work has been exceptionally challenging these past few weeks. If I allow it, my day job can overtake everything else in my life. I have been feeling torn between how to spread my time across my Day job, writing/editing, reaching out to my writer's community and home/family.  This weekend I took a short trip to the California Coast.  It’s kind of funny as I was not sure I wanted to take the trip because I kept thinking, “I won't be able to write while I am away.” I didn’t realize how much I needed this short respite from everything on my plate.

It is easy for some of us to get so immersed in our writing and all its associated activities, that it can be difficult to remember to take a break. Workout trainers coach their clients to take a day off. Our Spiritual leaders tell us to take a day off. These people are wise and know that it is important for us to rest. So, although I did not take this short trip to the coast with the intention of resting from writing, I did provide myself with the opportunity to rest by the ocean. I was able to breathe in the amazing air and feel the healing power of the ocean.  And as a result of embracing the rest, I was able to be more present and loving with my family during our short precious visit.

Sitting on the beach for a couple of days was rejuvenating!

If you are like me; overly focused on the writing process, then stop and take your well-deserved break.
