Threading a Writer's Community

As I research the process of launching my first book, I have learned there are 2 things that I can do now; long before my book is published:

1.    Build up my author platform(s); such as Instagram, Facebook, Threads,  etc.

2.    Build up my writer’s community

Five weeks ago, I launched my author Facebook and Instagram platforms.  About a week later, I learned about Threads.  Not having a clue how to use threads, I created an author account here as well.  It’s definitely trial by Fire.

As I have dabbled in the Threads social media platform this past month, I am surprised by the impressive amount of first-time authors out there.  Each day, my social media skills are improving, and I am meeting and following several members who are facing the same successes and challenges that I am experiencing as an author.  I feel like I have found the beginnings of my writing community.  It’s been an amazing experience thus far.

This weekend, I reached out to one of my new Thread friends attempting to follow her on Facebook.  She replied and suggested that we video chat.  I had never done anything like this before, but I agreed to meet up with her.  And, boy, am I grateful that I did.

I learned we had several things in common.  She just published her first book! I am not quite there, but I am working on publishing my first book.  She is retired.  Again, I am not quite there, but I will be within 5 years.  She is a grandma, and I am too!

We Video chatted for over an hour this weekend and I felt we could have continued to talk for another hour.  I learned so much about her journey to self-publishing.  She is and will continue to be a great resource and support to me as I continue this author’s journey.

If you are interested in following her.  Her name is Paulette Brooks.  Her debut novel is titled “Not Just a Homemaker: The extraordinary Life of Sheila MacGregor”. The genre is historical fiction. I have only read the first chapter, and I plan to leave her reviews at both Goodreads and amazon once I have completed the book.  One way, we as new authors can support each other, is to read our fellow author’s books and leave them reviews.

If you are interested in learning more about Paulette, she can be found on the following platforms:

Facebook:  Paulette Brooks, Author

Instagram: @paulettebrooksauthor

We all have so much in common. Why is there so much contention. Let's just visit and get to know each other.
